Magic Box!

This week, we found a poem called The Magic Box written by Islay Aitchison.

We decided we would borrow her ideas in her poem and write our own poems about a magic box.

If you missed out on visiting this years A and P show in Wanaka, then you can view a few pieces of Room 7's art work here or come into the classroom as it is now up on the wall! The children took photographs of the view from the school. We then used collage and soft chalk on top for different textures.

Whole School Triathlon

Room 7 have been training hard for this term's whole school triathlon. We were running every day at school and doing our own fitness at home also.

When triathlon day arrived last friday, we were all ready to go. Some of us had lots of nerves but we were all excited about the race.

We found the biking hard as there was a head wind on the way back to school.

The swimming section was a little chilly!

Some of us got placings but the best part was everybody had a go and did their best.

Hereare a few snippets from childrens writing about the day...

Vroom, I raced down a pebble stacked road. "Whoa" I said out of breath. This thing can fly. With the wind pushing me, I turned a corner.

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to Hawea Flat School for 2011!

I had a fantastic year away last year travelling the world and teaching in many schools in London.

I enjoyed every moment but it was nice to get back home and see some familiar faces!

I am looking forward to the year ahead with all the Room 7 children. We hope you take the time to visit our blog and leave a comment or two.

If you ever have any questions or queries or you just want to come in and have a look through the classroom, feel free to before or after school.

We have had a busy 3 weeks getting to know each other in Room 7. Here is a picture of a spider web we created to show how everone is unique in the classroom. Come and have a look on the class wall to see how we are all unique!

A visit to the farm and nursery!

During the second week of school this term, Room 2, 3, and 4 went on a trip to Shield's farm. We loved seeing the animals that they had there. We won't forget the smell of the pigs, the antlers and waiting for the deer to come down from the hills. Peter, Naomi, Hugh and Zac were full of information about animals and what they need to survive.

After the farm visit we went to Nook Road Nursery where Jamie and Diana showed us the living life cycle of a Pittosporum plant. We got to gather seedlings from the plants and plant them in containers to bring back to school! They told us all about what plants need to survive. They need good soil water, shelter and sunlight.

When we got back to school we wrote about a memory we had form our visit that day. We all enjoyed the day out and would like to thank everyone who came along to help.

Am I Alive?

Welcome back to School and we can't believe it is term 4 already!

This term our inquiry topic is called, 'Am I Alive?'. We are going to be looking at living things in our environment.
We are going to start our tuning in process by going on a farm trip and then to the Nook Nursery next Tuesday morning.
If you have anything on plants, bush, rain forests, habitats, trees, animals, bugs, insects, mammals etc, send them along to school so we can share and develop new knowledge on this science area!

This term is going to fly by! We have athletic sports next Thursday in Wanaka. We have been busy practicing sprinting, jumping, hurdles and throwing most afternoons so far. We are looking forward to competing against other children from other schools on Thursday.

Room 4

On the Move!

As part of our 'finding out' stage of the inquiry process, Room 4 and Room 3 went on a trip to the Toy and Transport Museum. We discovered many machines, cars, planes, trucks and toys that needed simple machines like pulleys, ramps, screws, wheel and axles, and levers to move.
We all enjoyed the canon gun. You had to push the pedals with your feet to turn it, and lift the lever to make the gun go up and down.
